Lets take a few words and input them in instead of king, since we do not have many kings now a days, at least not in the traditional since in first world countries.
Instead, lets add in good parent, if you are not one, or President/Governor. Those are still not exact equivalents, but lets go on with it.
What about politician?
A US House of Representative represents roughly 700,000 constituents – not to mention the number of businesses and other entities “living” within their district.
What this proverb says to me, or reminds me of is the simple truth that unless you are the single person you probably cannot fully understand what is going on with them, especially people in major political positions.
I generally give politicians the benefit of the doubt that they want what is best — in their mind — for the area that they are involved with (local, state, federal); yet I can also understand their general “envisioned future” and path, and can disagree with either, or both. Yet, I try to keep in check and understand I do not receive the same (either in quality or quantity) data as the elected officials.
Now, lets take this one more place – the CEO of a major corporation, say AIG or another one that has been in the news.
Same idea applies, they are more king line in their company then the politicians are. They should have good sized staffs and systems in place to provide the decisions makers the best data and proper amounts of data to make the best decisions. It is a much more involved job then most could even imagine simply because there is so much data to process & it’s not like ditch digging, you cannot go and look at a lot of tangible results to really measure the success. Some successes are just relative to what would have happened; a one million dollar loss as opposed to a one thousand million (or one billion) dollar loss is a great result.
All should be questioned and then potentially criticized I am not promoting something different, but I and we should keep ourselves in check in understanding that people in a king type position should be looking at more, considering more, etc then we probably are.
