Today I am working on a subarea for this site (and other sites in the future). The basic concept is to take something like the Revolution Two theme Black Canvas and make it where you can have the same functionality as only a part of a website as opposed to the entire focus of the site. Similar to the template for a series I worked on with my series Giving Thanks, and other elements like the Insider Hub pages at Artist Insider (best example), or micro-blog with Nation Investors (example).
To do this, first I am adding up some posts of photos I captured in the past.
From there I will put together some code and a page, and a good way to both view and navigate.
One note, this will not look nearly as impressive as when the overall theme for this site is redone, that is in the works, but the inspiration for this page template is working hard and thus that is the focus right now.
UPDATE – 3:15pm – Done for the Day
Well, it’s about 3:15 in the afternoon, this original post went up about 11:45 this morning. I did take a good long lunch break, but I am now to a point where I am happy with what I ended up with.
Some of the highlights for me:
- any page can be a gallery
- the image width on the gallery can be different for each page
- an image can show up in multiple galleries
- it is a self contained deal – so if you use the nav pix on the bottom of the screen it keeps it all correct
- the top section (above the image) is set on the page, so you can tell about the gallery
- You can have one or more images in the post that does not effect the gallery
And some things I am not thrilled with:
- what if you have more then 5 images?
There was another issue I was not thrilled about, then I realized I had made a mistake and found a really good fix. WordPress is great.
Thoughts? Comments?
Update 2 -6:50pm- keep working a little
Alright, I could not stop, there were just so many little things I keep wanting to do. Since my “I’m done” I am not sure what all I have done, but I made the thumbnails work better. The next step is to make it where if there are more then 5 pages/posts to display.
I also went back to my old personal blog and pulled in two posts (where I would have 5 image posts to play with). You can now see them on the gallery I have up.
So, now a new list: things I might get to sometime, especally if a client needs something like this in their site:
- make it where the image navagation at the bottom can handle more then 5 posts better
- make it more flexible with the text alongside each post – might be an issue of always needing a “more” tag or having to manually put it in.
- might add some options as to how the images are ordered, ascending vs descending post time might be workable, not sure random would work.
Alright, that is all … I have to go eat dinner my wonderful wife fixed me.
